You know, now more than ever, you have to show the value of your PR efforts! So…you’re thinking about a PR monitoring/measurement/outreach service. At first glance, they all kind of look the same, but look closer! Make sure you ask the right questions. There are many key differences you should consider, but you won’t be told unless you know what to ask.

- What markets and media do you cover? This, of course, is the basic, but I had to throw it in just in case. You should GIVE them (if it is not proprietary) your media list! And then follow up by asking for a thorough accounting of what they do and don’t have. You might be surprised. You’ll get much better intelligence if you do this vs. just settling for the generic “we cover all markets/media.”
- Ask to see a demo of hospitals and healthcare! If you’re shown a demo of banks, that should be a clue! Ask specifically for a healthcare demo and then go in and take a look at the media, even down to the local publications. Look closely at the analysis and see how deep it goes. It makes a HUGE difference!
- How deep do you measure share of voice/metrics? Typically, you want your PR measured vs. your competitors at the topline level and then drilled down – even to the service line or physician level. That way, you can see your share of voice conveniently in value, hits and impressions. Most services have a difficult time doing this, but we don’t as we specialize in healthcare and our healthcare clients demand this type of detailed analysis.
- Can we add the websites we need and LOCAL publications or TRADE Publications? In most cases, you’ll be surprised to find the answer to this is no. If they say yes, supply them with your key list and make sure they can cover it. Very few monitoring services can/will read your local pubs or trade pubs. We can, but MOST won’t go this deep.
- Can I have my own custom report with my logos/colors to send out to my C-list/key contacts? You’ve done a great job in generating PR and now you want to share your key stories with live links and metrics to your C-List, doctors and key contacts. This is far more valuable than reporting it out as a simple media value. You need a custom report, manually-filtered, with your own logo/colors. It can be tough to find a PR service that does this affordably. We do and our healthcare clients LOOK GREAT! Join us and you’ll look great too!
- Ask for referrals on the customer service! You want to make sure that you don’t have to go through layers of bureaucracy to reach your account rep or that every time you call, you don’t just get a voicemail. You want every request to be turned around in 24 hours or less and NOT additional! Ask for a service warranty in the contract so that your level of service is at least at the industry standard.
